SWK 5003.10 - Knowledge and theories for social work practice B
This subject builds on theories and practice models outlined in Knowledge and Theories for Practice A, extending into more complex practice applications, with a focus on professional decision-making, and application, and integration of theories for practice.
Students will examine and evaluate the relationships and contradictions between various underpinning philosophies, ideologies, values, and assumptions, and how these inform social work theories and models for practice. Students will analyse and apply social work theories to examine relationships, and then select and apply appropriate social work intervention strategies within micro, meso, and macro systems of society.
Through complex and challenging case study analysis, students will examine contemporary social work practice issues, such as the lived experience of: LGBTIQA+ communities; refugees; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples; homelessness; domestic violence; mental health and suicide prevention.
This subject is designed to both challenge and strengthen students’ direct social work practice skills, theoretical knowledge, models of practice, as well as encourage critical reflection on values and assumptions. Students will apply this knowledge for practice to design and develop professional assessments and interventions, including face to face, and telehealth and IT interventions, with individuals, families, groups, and communities.
