SWK 4005.10 - Cross cultural social work practice

In this subject, students will gain the knowledge, values, and skills required for effective cross-cultural practice. Students will examine the history of migration and migration policies and their impact on the experiences of cross-cultural communities in Australia, including the long-standing white Australia policy, and historical welcoming and restrictive migration policies. Post World War two policies will be focussed on, as this period of high migration during this era has shaped contemporary Australian society. Additionally, students will gain knowledge, values, and skills for working with refugees and asylum seekers, and explore how their lived experience of war and social exclusion has shaped their experience in Australia. Students will also explore key cross-cultural policy platforms, such as the multiculturalism of the 1970s, the Howard era asylum seeker policies, and contemporary visa eligibility and restrictions. Research literature for effective cross-cultural practice, and evidence-based practice, will also be explored and discussed. Students will have the opportunity to reflect on the impact of their personal and professional values on cross-cultural practice, located within a human rights framework.
