SWK 4004.10 - Law, ethics and human rights
In this subject, students will examine the relationship between professional practice and the Australian legal system, and how these processes apply to statutory social work practice. Through case studies, real life examples, and moot court cases, students will integrate knowledge of legal systems and processes, and apply social work practice ethics, including advocacy and human rights principles. Statutory areas of social work will be examined, including: domestic and family violence; sexual assault; child sexual abuse and reporting; child and family safety; youth justice; criminal justice; offending behaviours; advocacy. Human rights and the intersection with social work practice will also be examined. Students will examine ethical decision making, and its conundrums, as applied to issues including violations to human rights such as: mandatory detention; deaths in custody; discrimination; violence; and assault.
