SWK 4003.10 - Knowledge and theories for social work practice A

This subject examines and evaluates systemic, structural, and individual theories, and how these can be integrated for professional social work practice, across a range of settings. Structural theories include: postmodernism; critical theory and ecological perspectives; systems theories and the social determinants of health and wellbeing; as well as anti-oppressive and anti-racist theories for practice. Individual theories include psychological approaches, such as: humanism; grief; loss and trauma-informed practice; and the individual determinants of health and wellbeing. Students will integrate structural and individual perspectives to design holistic assessments and interventions. All theories and models are viewed through the lens of trauma-informed theory and practice. Further, students will demonstrate the process of critical reflection and evaluate their values and assumptions, to develop an emerging ethical theoretical framework for their professional social work practice.
