IT2050.10 – Operating Systems

This subject develops students’ knowledge of modern operating systems and their role in managing computing environments from both user-based and technological perspectives. Students examine how multiprogramming and multi-user systems coordinate processes, memory, storage, and input/output operations to deliver efficient and secure performance. Key topics include process scheduling, memory management, virtual memory, paging and segmentation, storage management, and I/O systems, with emphasis on resource allocation and optimisation across applications. By the end of the subject, students gain foundational knowledge applicable to systems administration, software development, cybersecurity, and infrastructure roles where understanding operating system behaviour is essential for performance, troubleshooting, and secure system design.
