IT2030.10 – Computer Security

This subject develops students’ capability to apply computer security principles in protecting organisational systems, data, and networks. Students examine real-world cyber threats such as malware, fraud, DNS attacks, and network attacks, and explore how organisations detect, prevent, and respond to these risks. The subject develops ability to explain and apply core security principles including confidentiality, integrity, authentication, and availability. Technical topics include encryption, cryptography, digital signatures, hashing, VPNs, firewalls, and intrusion detection systems. Students also develop foundational knowledge of organisational policies, governance concepts, and incident response practices. Through applied learning, students build practical skills aligned with entry-level roles such as cybersecurity analyst, SOC analyst, risk and compliance officer, and junior incident responder.
