IT1080.10 – Computer Networking

This subject introduces computer networking as the foundation of modern digital communication, supporting cloud services, e-commerce, cybersecurity, and global business operations. Students explore how data is transmitted across networks, from physical communication technologies to application-level services, through practical examples and industry scenarios. Core topics include network types and topologies, local area networks, internetworking, Internet protocols, packet switching, routing, and the Domain Name System (DNS), alongside networking architectures such as the OSI and TCP/IP models. Students also examine physical layer concepts including transmission media, encoding, and digital modulation. By the end of the subject, students will be able to analyse, design, and explain networked environments used in enterprise, cloud, and Internet-based systems, developing practical skills relevant to careers in networking, cybersecurity, cloud infrastructure, and IT support.
