Bachelor of Community Service

CS2040.10 - Diversity and Inclusion in Community Services

In this subject, students explore diversity through examining the relationships between culture and language, gender and sexuality, and abilities as well as inclusion and exclusion. The subject enables students to investigate contemporary social issues and debates related to culture, language, disability, ethnicity, sexuality, gender and other categories of individual identity and collective belonging. Theories of power and privilege will be applied and critically examined. Issues of language and culture need to be critically examined to ensure that services are accessible, equitable and appropriate, thereby creating a grounding of lifelong critical thinking in practice. Students will be supported to prepare to work with the most vulnerable people in our communities, acknowledging and appreciating that sexual orientation and gender are significant dimensions of inequality.
