Bachelor of Community Service
CS1030.10 - Communication Skills
This subject explores communication skills examining both oral and written communication as these skills are essential for working in the community services sector. Students critically examine an overview of the perspectives of service users and carers so that they are able to communicate more effectively and with appreciation of service users and carers ‘lived experience.’ It is essential that community service workers hear the ‘voices’ of service users and carers. This subject uses the experiences of service users and carers for students to develop an understanding of their needs and begin development of skills of engagement with and empathy for people who community services are designed for. The subject examines the fundamental nature of effective communication and the perception, attitudes, values, cultural issues, and social barriers of the communication processes. Importantly students need to also develop skills in effective written communication, from writing case notes to emails and reports.
