Master Of Engineering Management

ENG4011.10 - Capstone Project and Industry Internship Preparation

As the culminating learning experience of the Master of Engineering Management, students choose between:

· ENG4015.20 Capstone Project, and

· ENG4315.20 Industry Internship

The term directly prior to this culminating learning experience, students complete this subject, ENG4011.10. Students choosing the capstone project (ENG4015.20) or the industry internship (ENG4315.20) take ENG4011.10 together.

The overall goals of ENG4011.10 are to:

  • Inform students’ choice of capstone project or industry internship.

  • Apply and integrate students’ engineering management knowledge, skills and attributes.

  • Develop career-focused capabilities in interview performance, professional resume preparation, and the identification and communication of a distinctive value proposition.

  • Consolidate career goals and develop a structured graduate transition plan.

  • Apply the processes and methods of evaluation, research, proposal writing and project development and management.

This subject provides students with the opportunity to strengthen their professional skills in the field of engineering management and to develop an optimised plan for evaluating and/or delivering a solution to a chosen engineering management problem by the end of the subject. Students apply the evaluation and research life cycles required to initiate and investigate and/or evaluate a contemporary gap in the field of engineering management. Students continue to acquire the technical knowledge needed to solve engineering management problems and/or evaluate solutions. This includes learning various data collection and research / evaluation methods used in research and/or evaluation-based projects, such as conducting literature reviews, technical and academic writing, organising references, collecting and managing data using qualitative and quantitative methods, and applying research and evaluation methodologies while maintaining academic integrity. In the later weeks, the focus shifts to the development of a plan and project outline for ENG4015.20 or ENG4315.20, which will be completed in the following academic term. With guidance from their academic supervisor, students apply the concepts learned in class to formulate a gap, knowledge extension or evaluation, develop questions, select appropriate data analysis techniques and strategies, and create a realistic project plan and timeline. Throughout the subject, students participate in weekly discussions and frequent assessments, including a literature review, project outline, project design, and project / evaluation plan, which collectively support feasible and executable project / evaluation plans to be successfully completed in ENG4015.20 or ENG4315.20.
