IT1040 – Linear Algebra
In this subject, students develop an understanding of the theory of linear algebra, applications of linear algebra, and some of the main computational techniques used in these applications. This subject includes, but is not limited to, the study of systems of linear equations, matrices, determinants, vectors and vector spaces, linear transformations, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, and their applications. Computer software will be used to enhance the learning and teaching of topics and techniques covered. Unit contents include:
Matrix arithmetic, inverse of a matrix, solution sets of systems of linear equations; determinants and their properties.
Complex numbers and solution of polynomial equation.
Vector arithmetic, dot product, cross product.
Matrix transformations: null space, and column space of a matrix.
n-dimensional Euclidean space, linear independence, bases, projections and orthogonality.
Eigenvalues and eigenvectors, diagonalization of matrices, eigenvalues of the matrices of transformations of the plane.
